Catherine Johnson – Patron
Award winning script-writer, Catherine Johnson lives in Bristol with her family and dogs.
Her work includes the stage and screen hit musical ‘Mamma Mia!’ – for which she created an original story around the timeless songs of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA.
Catherine’s dream of becoming a writer began when she received the first Bristol Old Vic/HTV West Playwriting Award, for her play ‘Rag Doll’. She had left school at 16 and worked in shops and offices, so winning this competition was a wonderful shock! Her second play, ‘Boys Mean Business’ was produced at the Bush Theatre, London – followed by ‘Dead Sheep’, ‘Shang-A-Lang’ and ‘Little Baby Nothing’. Catherine also worked extensively at the Bristol Old Vic, writing ‘Renegades’, ‘Where’s Willy?’, ‘Too Much Too Young’ and ‘Suspension’.
At the same time, she embarked on a TV career, working on ‘Casualty’, ‘Love Hurts’, ‘Gold’ and ‘Byker Grove’, and scripting the screenplay ‘Sin Bin’ and an original series; ‘Love In The 21st Century’.
She has also written two plays for National Theatre Connections: ‘Through the Wire’ and ‘A Letter to Lacey’. ‘Through the Wire’, a musical set in a Youth Offenders Institution, was later re-written for Myrtle Theatre, Bristol – whose work with disadvantaged young people is inspirational.
She is currently co-writing a new musical and developing a TV series for Mainstreet Pictures.
Catherine is thrilled to join the team at Jackie Chan Dragon’s Heart Europe. She is a big fan of Jackie’s movies – and an even bigger fan of his charitable work and philanthropy. Maybe ‘Jackie Chan – the Musical’ will be next?!
